As we wrap up 2017 and prepare for 2018, we can’t help but ponder how we would like to change or improve in the coming year. We typically codify these aspirations into trite New Year’s Resolutions, most of which are seldom kept.As we begin to consider what we will focus our lives on in the coming year, lets take a moment to revisit the words Jesus offered in his final moments on earth. Speaking to a gathering of his closest followers, he offered a final set of instructions for how we should to live and around which to ought to orchestrate our lives.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
These words were not a nice set of platitudes, or optional suggestions to follow if we feel so inclined. Neither were these words simply intended for the friends who were present with him all those years ago. Jesus was declaring the mission that all of his followers were being empowered to engage, from that day until today. Notice how he begins with the statement “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” He continues to proclaim that through that very power, each of us who would pattern our lives according to his mission would ultimately have a profound impact on those around them.
As we contemplate our goals and dreams for the new year, how will this Great Commission of Jesus, shape our goals and dreams? How we engage in the mission Jesus laid out for us. How will we step into 2018 with the knowledge that we are equipped with all power to fulfill the mission of Jesus, this year?
Personally, I want to get to the end of 2018 and look back and say with confidence that this was a year where I got to know and enjoy God better. I also want this year to be marked by continually helping others find the freedom and the abundant life that only comes from following Jesus. If nothing else happens this year, I will know that God will have been pleased and my life will have been added to the lineage of Jesus followers who have done the same for over 2000 years.
