Over the next three week we will be engaging in a Bible Study that I originally developed for my church, The Father’s House, in Rochester, New York. It was developed as a way for our congregation to engage in the Hope is Here message series this August.  Check out the message series at http://www.tfhny.org, and I hope you enjoy the next three weeks.

Day 1 – The Blessings of Adoption

Welcome to the first day of our “Hope is Here” Bible Study at The Father’s House.  Over the next few weeks we will read through the book of Ephesians together and explore the hope we have as members of God’s family.

In today’s passage, Paul begins his letter to the Ephesians by articulating that if we have chosen to follow Jesus, we have been adopted into His family.  As you read, look for all the blessings  Paul tells us are ours as a result of being a part of God’s family.

READ – Ephesians 1:1-10

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:   2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,   4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love   5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,  6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.   7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,   8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight   9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ   10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

  1. My first effort was wiped out by learning the site’s log-in. Good, this will be shorter. Q#1 Main idea? The utter centrality and complete gift of God that is Jesus Christ. Adopted, blessed, redeemed, every spiritual blessing in the Beloved, forgiveness, …etc. All in Jesus Christ.

Q#2 How to good neighbor? Share the good news of Jesus freely without implying any merit on my part. See them as they are –loved by God and called to be joined in Him. Welcome and affirm all who are drawn by God’s grace. Extend the unconditional love of God others.

  2. God had chosen us to be part of his royal family before the world was even formed! And not that we were so deserving but by his grace and for his good pleasure. We’ve been chosen by his grace and have access only through the merits of someone else – Jesus Christ.

And because we’ve been given a gift and a position we neither earned nor deserved we ought to be the most forgiving and gracious people on this earth. Today we should tap into this unmerited grace and love through prayer so that we may extend it even to our undeserving neighbors.
