Who are the 5 people that are influencing you the most?
Before reading further, make a list right now of the 5 people you feel influence you the most.
Many of us will respond to this question with a list of speakers, teachers, authors and pastors. Some of us will include spouses, parents, and mentors.
Consider this quote, “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”
This idea was popularized by Jim Rohn. He was an entrepeneur, author of many books and a motivational speaker from several decades ago. His insights into what actually influences us are fascinating. Although I have heard this quote many times over the past several years. But I am not sure if I have internalized this truth. How about you?
Self Assessment: Take a look at that list of people you indicated earlier are the 5 who are influencing you most as a person and a leader. How often do they challenge you? How strong are their personalities? How many times do you talk with them about your strengths and weaknesses as a leader? How often do their responses to you irritate and bother you, because they expose issues in your leadership that need to be addressed?
If you want to get One Grip Higher… make sure the people you spend time with are bringing your “average” up and not down!
