Humble. Active. Diligent.

These are three words that have changed the world many times.  They are three words that can change your world as well, if you apply them to everything you do.

If you want to be a leader worth following… be humble, active and diligent.  If you live and embody these words, I would follow you!

Be Humble: A humble leader is worth following because they don’t think they are bigger or better than anyone else.  A humble leader naturally influences others because they aren’t trying to get anything from those that follow them.  A humble leader is in it for the good of everyone else.  There are no tricks, no smoke and no mirrors.  You get what you get.  A humble leader is dependable.  And lets be honest… humility isn’t coupled with leadership all that often.  If you are a humble leader… you will stand out.

Be Active: An active leader gets stuff done!  You aren’t a leader if nothing happens.  You may have influence, but without being active you aren’t leading.  The key however, is intentional activity, to a useful and productive end.  I knew a leader once who was a frenetic mess. This person was always running around like Chicken Little.  This particular leader was the most active person I knew, but nothing was ever accomplished.  Eventually, no one was willing to follow.  Conversely, I know several humble and active leaders, who seem to be constantly on the go, but their activity is always focused on a strategic goal.  I often find myself in the slipstream of their activity, drawn along and excited by what we get to accomplish together.  If you are an active leader, with intentionality, people will be drawn to participate in whatever you are leading.  People like leaders who get things done.

Be Diligent: A diligent leader, who is both humble and active, has the potential to revolutionize the world.  The word “diligent” is defined as “having or showing care and conscientiousness in one’s work or duties” (www.google.com). If you are humble and active in your leadership people will follow.  If you add conscientious care to what you are working on, the sky is the limit. I believe you will literally revolutionize the world around you if you can latch on to these three characteristics and apply them to your leadership and life. Who wouldn’t want to follow you?

The great leaders of the past lived and led this way… Socrates, Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Ahng Sung Suu Kyi to name a few. Of course, we would not apply the adjective “humble” to many  other successful leaders in history.  Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Stalin and many others, have led without humility… but would you have wanted to follow them voluntarily? Every leader I would want to follow is humble, active and diligent.

Consider the exhortation of the Apostle Paul on leadership in the book of Romans when he wrote, “I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think (humble)… Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly (active)… he who leads, with diligence” (Romans 12:3,6,8 ESV).

If you don’t want to be a leader… that’s cool.  Be humble, active and diligent, and you will make a difference wherever you go.  You will literally make every relationship you are in better.

If you don’t want better relationships… well, be humble, active and diligent.  You will like yourself better.

Whether you are a leader or not, you will be One Grip Higher (maybe 3) if you are humble, active and diligent!
