If you want to get One Grip Higher… act like a toddler!Today I hung out with my cousin’s baby boy Silas! It was awesome. He moves at full speed all the time. He lives large and loves life. Nothing is done half way. Nothing is held back! He is full of questions, energy and most of all, an interest in everything and everyone.

We went to our local ice cream shop. Silas was less interested in the ice cream and more interested in the people. He must have walked (more like a waddle to be honest) up to 15 different people in about 30 minutes. He would sorta sneak up on them while they were seated and enjoying their ice cream. He would get really close. And then he would just say… “Hi!”  Sometimes he would wave. Sometimes he would just look at them with a subtle smirk on his face. It almost seemed like he was just letting them know he thought they were interesting and worth some of his time.  Every person Silas met smiled! It didn’t matter if it was another kid or an adult, they all had a similar response.

If we want to gain influence with people we need to be more like Silas…

  1. Be happy – let every person you interact with know that they bring you joy
  2. Be interested – pay genuine attention to every person you encounter
  3. Be in the moment – slow down, spend time with people, even when it’s awkward =
Somewhere along the line, we lost sight of what matters! Somewhere between when we were Silas’ age an now, we learned a bunch of “social rules!” I think we need to unlearn a few! Just don’t be creepy about it.
Seriously, if we all did these three things that Silas does, with everyone we meet, we would be One Grip Higher!
