If you want to get One Grip Higher, find a baby, and smell it’s hair!

My baby girl Emma is 2 weeks old. And already she is teaching me new and wonderful things. She is awesome. (Click here to read her blog!) She was born with an incredible plume of dark brown hair.  Her hair is a lot of fun… these pictures were taken first thing in the morning a few days ago. She is a lot of fun.

Everyone who meets her inevitably comments on her hair! Often people ask if they can smell it.  At first I thought this was really strange.  I mean, I don’t go up to you asking if I can smell your hair, so why are you wanting to smell Emma’s hair?  Well after the first few requests, I spent some time smelling Emma’s hair myself.  To be honest, I am not sure what it is… but the smell seems to be mildly narcotic.  Once you start smelling you want to smell more.  Inevitably I find myself smiling on the ride home from work, looking forward to my afternoon snuggle with Emma on the deck and the chance to smell her hair.  I think it is kind of like coffee, it doesn’t make much sense if you try to describe it, but try it a few times and you are hooked.

My buddy Anthony and his wife came over for dinner yesterday (actually, they brought incredible lasagna).  We had a campfire and Anthony was holding Emma and smiling away as if she were his own child. I caught him sniffing her hair a few times.  Each time, he got this huge grin on his face. Anthony works in a pretty stressful job, but while holding Emma I guarantee you he wasn’t thinking about work.

Holding a baby, smelling her hair… these are moments in life that accentuate humanity.  I think that taking time to enjoy the beauty of a child is a great way to rejuvenate your energy, gain perspective on life and center your soul. Holding a baby makes you smile… and that is just awesome.

If you want to get One Grip Higher… find a baby, and smell her hair.
