If you want to get One Grip Higher today choose to be the Mento!

A few years ago I saw my first “Mento in the 2 liter Pepsi bottle” video on YouTube. I’m sure that you’ve seen a similar video (if not… watch the video below)! The explosion that followed the Mento being dropped into the soda was incredible. Prior to watching that video I had no idea the potential contained in a 2 liter of Pepsi.

People are kind of like Pepsi! Each and every person you interacted with today has tremendous potential. The problem is that most of us can’t see the potential contained within. It often takes an external catalyst for us to see what is possible.

About 8 years ago, I had the opportunity to visit with the Superintendent of a large school district in Western New York. As a young and emerging educational leader I asked him what it would take to have the kind of influence he had in his position. With out hesitation he said to me, “Go back to your classroom, and be the best teacher you can be today. Someday, someone will see excellence in what you do and offer you a promotion.” He was a Mento in my life. How often do you intentional look for and call attention to the potential in the people around you?

Today’s Action Step: Be the mento in someone’s life right now!

  • Send a text message to someone you don’t normally compliment or build up.
  • Tell them something you see in them that you admire, respect or enjoy.
  • Then tell them how you see it potentially developing.

If you do this on a regular basis you will find that your influence will begin to grow. As people begin to believe that you believe in them, they will naturally be influenced by your involvement in their lives… And you will find yourself One Grip Higher.
